Overplayed Band of the Week: FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH
I don’t get this band, I really don’t. Every time I hear this band played (which is quite often), I immediately think they must be some sort of gimmick. I consider myself to be quite up to date on the latest music trends, and I usually become suspicious of bands that suddenly pop up out of nowhere without having to build up an initial following. Five Finger Death Punch started around 2005, but didn’t release any material until 2007. This band suddenly became the darlings of Ozzfest-inspiration in a year? I could be way off base here, but it seems the only reason this band is even remotely popular is because they have leeched off what made their peers popular, came up with some hip name and a marketable “badass” look. Everything about this band seems fabricated! I have to give it to them and their label though, so far everyone seems to be taking the bait. In an age where the bar for legit mainstream aggressive music has dramatically risen in comparison to the age of nu-metal in the late 90’s, Five Finger Death Punch are survivors of a bygone era who have notched up their sound just enough to stay credible in a world where talented musicians are spreading their wings. I can only hope the fans of this band (who will inevitably be of the younger generation), will use them as a gateway drug to much more potent metal.
(UPDATE: I wrote all of this without realizing that the vocalist is formerly of Motorgrater, guitarist from U.P.O. and a few members of W.A.S.P. I think this new found info can be deemed “Exhibit A” to support my above opinion.)

This band sucks. Just look at them. The kung-fu outfit, ridiculous bearded guy… Total crap. They’re like a harder version of that band “Cold.”

I Just saw them at the Mayhem fest and they pretty much blew everyone away. Best show of the day hands down. They are insane live = which explains the quick rise.
About the bad ass marketable fabricated look, I don’t think they glued on the beird and the dreads, or wear a wig, to grow that shit takes years so they probably didn’t start yesterday…. on that note check your source – these guys never played Ozzfest btw. I saw every Ozzfest

Pedal – It was an attempt at humor, which apparently failed. I have adjusted it to suit your needs.
As far as the look goes, I generally could care less how a band looks, but these guys try too damn hard to achieve a marketability for their band. Its laughable! Chinese outfits? Come on man.

Their name also sucks. I’ve listened to a couple of songs by them and I am far from impressed. They are the generic midpoint between Stonesour and Slipknot (two bands that have no business being as popular as they are). The 5FDP singer sounds like Corey Taylor when he does clean stuff and the backing music is just bland and very influenced by the late Nu-Metal trends, or as I like to call them “Fuck You! Metal” bands.

This is a band that all the young “metalheads” love…..you know, the Hot Topic crowd! Awful band, just as bad as Avenged Sevenfold or Bullet For My Valentine.

This is by far the worst band since linkin park. Bunch of whining and total nonsense for lyrics. Astounding how many confused young people will relate to whatever it is they sing about.

Yeah, i have to agree that these guys are intolerable…take for example the stark contrast between their hardcore bad-ass image and name with lyrics from their latest so-called hit. “I am so fed up with everyone around me…NOBODY SEEMS TO CARE!!…It’s always do this, do that, I don’t wanna live that way.” It sounds as though this song was inspired when his mom was yelling at him to clean his room. Not too worried about receiving a five-finger death punch from any of these clowns.
And btw Pedal2theMetal: just because you have long dreads and a long beard doesn’t entitle you to be talented. Also, the Ozzfest lineup varies from city to city, at least it did when I went to my first one in 1998, so to say that you’ve seen every Ozzfest is as ridiculous as FFDP.

First off, let me say I’m no noob to metal. I’ve been listening to it for a very long time, all the way back to slayer, megadeath, and old school, metallica (back when they were “kill em all”). I’m no noob to metal by anymeans. I got this cd a couple months ago and I really like it, they find a good balance between melody and the double bass and the heavy guitar rifts that defines what metal is. Some of the lyrics can be kind of old, but its good too at least see an aggresive band anymore. It seems with all the new “sub genres” most the time people are just standing up there screaming into a mic for no good reason. Its good to hear a lead sing with some vocal talent. Also just one last little comments since I am from Iowa, part of the reason both corey taylor’s band have made it as far as they have is due to his talent. He’s not just some guy that just appeared out of nowhere with a hit band like the rest of the idiots these days, he had to work his way up here in the local scene before someone would take notice.

To say that FFDP didn’t work for their glory is complete bullshit. They busted their balls to get where they are and should recieve at least some credit for that. And the Kung Fu outfit has a purpose, the fucker who wears it has a black belt!!!

The band is trite, no less made up of musicians from bands that were either destined to fail, or were popular in the way that hair metal was popular. Wearing a Kung Fu outfit aside, FFDP is made up of the typical nu-metal building blocks…because they know it’ll get them rich.
Horrible band name, fabricated look, boring sound. I heard them a while ago when my brother told me about them. He has good taste in music, but also listens to a lot of bad (in my opinion) music. If it likes it, whatever. I don’t. FFDP is just plan bad. Korn 2.

Faustus – FFDP was created in 2005, and they released their album in 2007. Virtually all of the band members have experience in other bands which is one one of the main reasons for their rise to popularity. These guys didn’t have to work their asses off to get to the “big time,” it was handed to them. And finally, what does wearing Asian style martial arts gear have anything to do with a black belt? I have a degree in information technology, but you don’t see me lugging around my laptop at metal shows.
Comment from coled24

Yeah that black belt comment is worthless. The only people who wear their martial arts clothing outside of their gym/dojo/fighting ring are small children. My buddy’s been doing kung-fu for years, he doesn’t show up to work in his gi just to show people that “he means business.” Maybe I should do that… show up to work wearing only a carefully placed copy of Adobe Design Premium CS3 and have pencils sticking out of my nose. “You guys go on and cut up those sides of beef, I’ll be over here prepping chicken… ARTISTICALLY.”

I like Korn lol, I seriously dont see wots everyone’s problem with it, Ok mybe their previous album was a bit weak but those guys have come a long way and obviously they are in a proceess of reinventing themselves, their last album was very experimental but had some good qualities that i like. Bt thts besides the point, as for the chinese outfits, who this is mearnt to be metal!!! not some fashion show , no one should give the fuck bout wot the guy is wearing. Thats the problem with people these days, i liked metal because it was out of the rdinary, it didnt follow the do’s and donts of society, no boundaries. All of a sudden i see the so called metalheads judging a bands by wot they wear it nw seems t be all about the fashion. I miss the old days of metal when sum1 like mayhem’s dead could show up in some torn-down rotten clothing to do a show. I seriously think we are better than this, criticise the music all u want ill even support u in places bt start judgng them because of what they wear i jst find it to be desparate for reasons to not like them. Bands have to be original, if tht means playing live in speedos, fine by me as long as their music is gr8 i dnt really giv a shit.(Bt then again, tht wud b quite hilarious)

I think not being able to write really takes away from an argument. If i get one sentence in – wait no – a few words in and i start seeing something like “wots” instead of “whats” i just assume that person is an idiot and i stop reading. It’s usually the case, I’ve come to find.

Just chill guys, i was just messing. Its not being unable to type, i was typing in short form except maybe yeah i made a mistake or two since i was in a rush. And i am new on this blog so i really didnt think its that much of a big deal writing short. And for the record im not 12 years old.
Look if you could not read my short form text i was simply stating that i haven’t heard the band before and if they really suck then yeah great that’s one band off my list however, my argument was that one should not judge a band by what they wear, i think its rather pointless, criticise their musical quality and talent but not the look, that is just being desperate. I am really against fashion, and i think its a kind of brainwashing agent, the whole idea of dressing in a certain way so that you can fit in a particular group. It makes an individual lose their identity. We look at rappers and critisize how they wear, the extra large t-shirts and bling necklaces, but slowly it seems like us as metalheads are turning out in a similar way. You cannot tell someone what they should wear, unless you are a slave to fashion. I just found that argument pointless.
By the way guys as you can see, i can write! Maybe next time you should label all your blogs(write in full so everyone can read), i have to admit, i have never seen a blog with people that cannot read short form.

Llewronymous: no, you’re not. You’re making an argument though, and honestly it’s easy to assume things about the person that spells “what’s” as “wots”. You’re not being graded — it’s more of a matter of writing coherently to convey an effective point. Experience tells me that people that don’t take the time to spell don’t really give a shit about arguing a point, just stating their opinions. In that respect most of the people that post here on a regular basis will dismiss those people.
At the end of the day, you can choose to care or not. If you don’t, it’s not a big deal. But it’s cool to see people posting their arguments whether they agree or not. Just consider the fact that an argument well-constructed goes a lot further on this forum even if you like the shittiest band (that’s not a jab at your musical tastes, just a comment in general).

First of all, thanks for the intro, maybe next time when i want to write something i may give the time i need in order to write in proper argumentative form, or i may think twice about posting lol. Secondly, though i did suggest an interest in the “shittiest band” i have never heard of it (besides on this website) and i probably never will therefore your last sentence is rather inaccurate. Yes i like some metalcore, along with other genres and i like korn (which i think is quite a brave thing to say on this website regarding how much its been thrashed in comments along with the nu metal movement, though there are some guys who were trying to defend it), but i haven’t heard the “shittiest band” which in this case, based on the article is Five Finger Death Punch i assume. Just thought i could straighten things up a bit. But yeah, this is my last post on this.

The band that pops out of nowhere? No, there is no such thing. They were digging in the trenches, for two years before their record came out and BTW. and before that they were widely popular in the underground. That is the reason they got a deal on the first place. Because you don’t have your fingers on the pulse of the scene – that doesn’t mean they popped out of nowhere! You’re just not up to speed. The next big band (you will hate of course) is huuuge in the underground and signing a deal right now. Two years from now you’ll be hating their “sudden” success too.

Dimmu – They had no demos and released their first and ONLY EP a couple of weeks before the album came out. They had no demos, no splits, no nothing. This is a band comprised of well known musicians using the success of their other bands as a launchpad for this project which is solely designed for commercial success. I remember seeing Shadows Fall and All That Remains play in a little local club with 50 people there 3-4 years before they hit it big, I guarantee you Five Finger Death Punch has never played in a pisspot club as an opening act for another less than huge act…never.

All you people need to get over yourselves.. gee I wish I was the expert at figuring out who looked like sounded like and was wearing what.. I just like what I hear & don’t need ‘a picture of a band’ to validate what sounds good to me or your over-rated opinion of yourself as some kind of fashion police as if that had anything to do with the music. I guess I’m just not as wonderful and gifted to ””know”” what sounds good with the picture…..???? “Just cause YOU don’t like it, don’t mean it ain’t no good!’

It’s funny what everyone here knocking the band turns out to be a douchebag (or does a damn good job of sounding like one). All you people knocking them for how they look are only empowering them and their fans. Idiots like you ruin music. Their look has nothing to do with their sound, and if you don’t like their sound STFU, turn it off, and keep it off! Grow up.
