Music Video: Overkill – Elimination
Monday, September 15, 2008
There has been some discussion over this song in some of the Metallica posts on this site, so let us reveal the true majesty of thrash masters Overkill in one of their best songs…ever. Oh, and this shit ain’t girly nor does it sound ANYTHING like Metallica. Unbelievable.
Album: Years of Decay
Label: Atlantic Records
Year: 1989

I’ve never heard this band before, but I’m sure glad I haven’t. The music is awesome I love the drum beats and fast riffs. But the singing is absolutely abysmal. AS cool as the music is I can’t listen to this band because of that singing. That’s the exact same reason that I don’t like the Sword.
Lobo – Totally legit opinion, but there are plenty of other old school thrash acts out there. You should check out some of the following if you haven’t already: Sadus, older Sepultura, Onslaught, Nuclear Assault, Artillery, Kreator
Listened to all but Nuclear Assault and Artillery before, and gave them a go through and was thoroughly pleased. That given with the other bands you listed are some favorites of mine means that I’ll be bookmarking this page for all my metal needs! The only thing I don’t like about this site is the distaste for Metallica. I must say that I still enjoy their music, Death Magnetic has been pleasing me so far. All nightmare long and Judas Kiss are some good songs, you may not agree but oh well, that is what personal taste is for. That small rant aside this is a great site and I’ll be coming back for more.
Lobo, LOL thats why they posted it, I told them it was horrible!. I told you boyz ABYSMAL!! Years of Decay and a few other select songs thats all they had mostly the voice (not the lyrics, great lyrics who can forget Evil Never Dies, ruined it)… Just bought Opeth’s new one to check it out. Great porduction…lousy DM voice ruined great production, was not impressed by the typical ,great technical death metal drumming with no inspiration at all.
Eric – Why would you buy an Opeth CD when you knew it had death metal in it? Just to come here and slag Opeth? Why don’t you tell us what your album of the year is so far Eric? I’d be interested to know if its Death Magnetic.
I’m not done with the Opeth, I like to listen long and hard, I like to let music sink in, give it a chance to simmer if you will, it might take a week or two as it seems this is a complex one. My thoughts were initial and can always change later. Certainly I like the diversity of sounds in the album. Same with DM my thoughts will surely change…only time can tell how this one will sit with me. After a week I can say i’m disappointed with the sound quality, the style is a little dated but that is personal opinion.
The sound quality?! You like Death Magnetic and you’re knocking Watershed? That’s absurd. Mikael runs circles around Metallica in terms of ability, song writing and all around creativity. I would bet he plays drums better than Lars. Seriously. Not to mention he’s a better singer than James has ever been. He has one of the best growls the genre has ever heard. The man can enunciate when he’s growling! In addition, his clean vocals are better than any in the business, when it comes to be a straight up singer.
You hate death metal vocals, you hate old school higher pitched vocals, you LIKE Metallica… how do you call yourself a fan of the metal genre? You basically just shit on Opeth (and then back peddled when someone called you out on it). What is your deal? If you’re here just to fuck with metal fans, the joke is getting pretty old now.
Mikael’s clean vocals aren’t better than any in the business Cole, gotta disagree with you there. He’s great for Opeth, but he doesn’t have a very good range. His growls though, are some of the best, I agree with you there.
Eric – Could you explain how Opeth’s sound is outdated? The closest “dated” sound Opeth has is death metal (which is still quite popular), progressive metal and goth metal. The latter two didn’t start becoming popular until the 90’s, and in terms of metal, bands that develop in the 90’s are still very young.
I meant the sound quality of Death Magnetic (read above) is shitty and a little dated. Sorry I quess I should have stated that a little clearer, you had brought up that album in the previous post. I said above the production of Watershed is good. Initially in Watershed I have this feeling of a CD you buy in a book store like “Celtic Moods” or “Norwegian Forest”. The music is very atmospheric with melodies but none that are to strong. If you could buy a Metal album of this type this would be it. I dont mean this as an insult, infact you can clearly tell this is what they were going for Heavy Atmosphere, kinda like U2’s Unforgetable Fire, or some works by Pink Floyd. I really need to listen more though. What I find strange is lack of a strong lead guitar sound, it’s there kinda in the background.
I’m sorry I’m picky when it comes to vocals. Hey I liked Mike Howe on Metal Chruchs Blessing in Disguise. He had kinda high voice but it worked. Boy that was a long time ago. Anthem to the Estranged I think it was called, I loved that one. Also Rest in Pieces that was an anthem.
I used to hate death metal vocals, but now that I see the diversity in them I almost prefer them over power metal acts. I think some harsh vocals like a lot of the older thrash bands, and some of the dissonant stoner/doom vocals (like High on Fire or Cult of Luna) are a bit harder to get used to. Compare Opeth vocals to that of Behemoth, though — for instance. Mikael has very “clean” death metal vocals. You can understand the lyrics most of the time on an Opeth album, whereas other death metal vocals may be too muffled (though in Behemoth’s case, just as badass).
It’s all matter of opinion, sure. But if you’re at all interested in the style let it grow on you. There’s some sick stuff out there that people don’t get into simply because they don’t like or understand the harsher vocal styles. One band you should never get into is King Diamond. That guy’s voice is definitely horrible.
I agree King Diamond, I actually had a few albums back in the 80’s, if I remember the music was interesting. Abigail I think was the title. Glen Danzig’s solo career. I loved a few songs and if i remember his band was pretty good. The vocals on a lot of his tracks just told me this guy should not be singing. I hope i dont offend anyone.
Let me be more clear. Glen could sing his ass off…I think it was more the choice of styles in certain songs which often killed it for me. Who can forget the thrilling singing in Mother.
What are you talking about Glen Danzig? King diamond was the singer for King Diamond
They’re two different people eric. I don’t even like Danzig or King Diamond but I know that..
Wait what…? Glen Danzig has nothing to do with King Diamond. Glen Danzig was in the Misfits and had a solo career. King Diamond is a different person. Had a solo career and was the singer for Mercyful Fate. And why do you keep referencing U2? U2 sucks.
Eric: Glen Danzig’s solo career was NOT King Diamond — in fact, King Diamond was the singer from Mercyful Fate. Gen’s solo releases went under the name Danzig, oddly enough.
In addition, Danzig sounds COMPLETELY different. He has that bluesy/elvis voice whereas King Diamond sounds like a pitbull latched onto his testicles. And not the cool high pitched scream like Bruce Dickinson or Cam Pipes… like lame little girl impression scream.
Overkill rules!
Your right about that could be more opposite.
I sure am right. It reminds me of the time when Cannibal Corpse, who had Rod Stewart on vocals at the time, was touring with the thrash juggernaut fronted by Glen Benton, Sevendust. It was crazy!
I wish I had kept that cassette. I havent heard King Diamond in years. It’s fun to listen to an album you enjoyed say 15 years ago but have not heard since. Funny how your tastes can change.
