And the most metal video goes to…My Chemical Romance?
When one thinks of My Chemical Romance, the words heavy and metal really have no adherence. However, in their most recent music video for the cover of Bob Dylan’s Desolation Row, My Chemical Romance has turned classic folk song into an anthemic hardcore punk song bordering on old school metal at times. The music though, as catchy as it is (yes, My Chemical Romance has created an extremely catchy song), isn’t what makes this most metal of music videos. Instead, for the length of the song, we as the viewers, are treated to stylish chaos with some of the best mosh pit video in a music video I have ever seen. Most metal videos with live settings usually lack animation and real soul, but this video is very creative, very violent, and all maintaining the slick imagery to keep MTV teenyboppers coming back for more. Weird how that works eh? I don’t want to give too much away, but I really think that metal and punk fans will get a kick out of this song, and the video that goes with it. I might just have to check out their new album if Desolation Row is a sign of things to come.

Well first off, it won’t get seen by teenyboppers on MTV because they don’t show videos on MTV. Secondly, I fucking hate this band with a bloodthirsty passion that only Pol Pot could appreciate. This band is garbage and this song blows and if you weren’t a good friend Codeman, I would send you a pound of runny St. Bernard shit in the mail for posting this on a metal site, whether its yours or not. Post all of the Avantasia you like but this… oy. Lest we forget there was a umbrella dance number in one of their earlier videos. Yeeeuuugh. Furthermore, mosh pit videos are generally stupid and when you throw in a band that has no business even having a mosh pit, it just makes it worse. The only one I really like is the video for “From Sacrifice To Survival” by Skinless. Its redneck and there’s some shitty hardcore dancing but its just them in a parking lot rockin out to one of their best songs.
Now then, the best metal video ever without a doubt is by (and I know you absolutely despise them) Meshuggah for the song New Millennium Cyanide Christ. It may even be the best music video ever just because it is such a great portrayal of the band. The video for Bleed sucked but NMCC and the 2 videos (I believe there are 3 but the “blue” one and the Mr. Kidman’s Delirium version are the ones I am talking about) for Rational Gaze are both awesome. It’s rare to see metal videos that are as fitting and creative as those.
Cole, its just a music video. You need to relax brother. I don’t actually think this is the best metal video created, it was supposed to be an ironic title. And why would you hate any band with a passion? Its just a band man, if you don’t like it, don’t listen to it. I think this is a clever cover with the band playing some true punk music that is rarely heard in the mainstream, and the video justifies the intensity of the music accordingly. I have seen the Skinless video you spoke of, and while its entertaining, I think it’s just another average metal music video.
Not a metal video. Not even the worst metal video, because it isn’t metal. It’s just…bad.
oh man.. cody… really? I dunno man. This shouldn’t be on this site, frankly. It’s nowhere near being metal, and.. I dunno man.
Well its fun to really hate bands that a lot of stupid teenagers like and I also wasn’t being really serious. I really cannot stand My Chemical Romance but I don’t care about them more than I hate them. What makes me hate a band like this is just that they get a lot of credit for creativity and most metal bands aren’t given any credit or just damned from the get go.
I guarantee you guys if I threw an AC/DC video up here you wouldn’t have made the same comments. Its not metal, so what? It’s a blog. Let’s turn the elitism down a notch gentlemen.
Oh i thought the name of the site had something to do with what’s posted here. It’s not elitist to dislike a band or say they aren’t metal if it’s true.
Are you kidding me? AC/DC is a whole helluvalot closer to metal than this pop punk crap. I cannot honestly believe that you, an avid metal fan with his own critically acclaimed METAL blog is defending My Chemical Romance. I mean, if you like em, fine, but this just isn’t the right place. Shit, I like Squeeze (Tempted by the fruit of anoooother…) but I’m not going to post a video for Black Coffee In Bed on here.
Yeah but that’s because AC/DC isn’t for girls.
I think this is a losing battle Codeman. Sorry, I can’t endorse my chemical romance on a metal site. I’m canceling my sponsorship check for April.
I just watched it again.. what the fuck cody
Nate – You’re right, but when one argues that point and THEN adds that it shouldn’t be on the blog for that simple reason, is being elitist. This is a blog, which means its no holds barred. This is the reason why I choose to blog and not run one of the other trillion e-zines, because I can throw my opinions out there. I like that you guys throw out dissenting opinions, including these ones believe it or not, but your choice of words definitely make you guys sound elitist.
coled24 – Where are the excessive melodies? Where are the unending hooks? Where are the nasally vocals? If you think this is pop punk then you don’t know punk because this is much harder than punk from the 80’s. In fact, this song highly resembles Oi Punk (check out Cocksparrer’s “We’re Coming Back” for a comparison in the classic Oi sound, and you’ll notice that the My Chemical Romance song is far heavier). With that said, it more than qualifies for this site as I wholly embrace hard rock, hardcore and punk. Besides, was it not punk that invented moshing? If it weren’t for metal embracing music very much like this we wouldn’t have thrash. You don’t like it? Fine, but it definitely belongs on this site.
I disagree completely but we’re not going to change each other’s minds on this so there’s no point in arguing.
I never argued against you posting it — I merely commented that it’s bad. Barring heaviness or metal-ness, it just sounds like a bastardized version of a Bob Dylan song, and what’s worse it’s like they looked up “mosh pit” on wikipedia and made a video based on what they read. And the song itself? I’m not a huge fan of Bob Dylan, nor do I know what the song is about, but I’m pretty certain My Chemical Romance missed something in the translation.
It’s like everything I’ve ever complained about seeing on MTV because it’s theatrical cheese. It’s a poorly executed cover, at best. It glorifies a mosh pit like only MTV could — and for that, yeah it makes me wonder why it’s on this site. In my opinion, posting it on this site takes away from the fact that people come here for metal (or to defend Metallica), not to see a My Chemical Romance video they can easily watch on Youtube (and probably already have 13 times in a row). I never said it shouldn’t be on this site though.
I woke up late late last night… around 3:00am and I heard something coming from Cole’s room. I crept to his door and put my ear to it, and what did I hear but Desolation Row, and muffled sobs. This must have gone on for at least two hours. I’m exhausted today, to say the least.
I can see the punk influence. I think they’re trying to hard to sound like it though. And I agree with the mosh pit. It does look like they did research on what a mosh pit is. I don’t care if it’s on this site or not, I just makes me laugh at how hard they try to sound like old school punk.
yea. pretttttty gay.
Nate – I never said you made the comment, which is why I didn’t say “you” in my comment. As for the moshpit, how do you know what My Chemical Romance’s history is with mosh pits? Perhaps they are big metal fans and have been to more shows than we have. Obviously they know punk considering this song bleeds old school punk (no one can deny this, I can give you example after example of bands that sound very much like this song and are tried and true vets of the English punk scene), so I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume they know a thing or two about moshpits considering traditional punk and hardcore invented it. Furthermore, refer me to even one non-metal video in MTV’s history that even resembles the moshpit violence in this video.
As for Bob Dylan, you admit your not a big fan and also admit you no nothing about this song, so how can you possibly say its a poorly executed cover or that there is something missing in the translation? It’s a punk cover of a Dylan song, how else is it supposed to sound?
This is a justified entry because it reflects my tastes, and ultimately, that’s why people return to continue reading AMR as opposed to other e-zines and blogs.
I cannot believe you are comparing My Chemical Romance to real Punk. I don’t care if you’re talking about this song or that song, you’re talking about a shitty band that tours with bands in the vein of Panic At The Disco, Fallout Boy and Thirty Seconds To Mars and then having the balls to compare them to British Punk. And then to put the icing on the cake, you call it metal? That’s just insulting.
Now, I know that this is your blog; you generate about 98% of the content here and you do a nice job. I try when I can, I’ve got about half an article in the works but I’m a busy guy. However, that doesn’t mean that I don’t care about what appears on here. While I may not have a true say and while it will do nothing but piss you off, I can definitely tell you that this is far and way the worst and most embarrassing thing that has appeared on this site. That is my honest opinion and I am standing behind it because this is a travesty. I would rather travel to Montreal and see Avantasia live than buy this song off of iTunes for 99 cents. My Chemical Romance sucks.
What’s next, Modest Mouse?
At the end of the paragraph that you ADDRESSED TO ME, you said: “I like that you guys throw out dissenting opinions, including these ones believe it or not, but your choice of words definitely make you guys sound elitist.” You grouped me in with Cole and Carter when I never claimed this video wasn’t metal enough to be on the site. You happened to put the whole piece in that paragraph ADDRESSED TO ME about “it shouldn’t be on the blog for that simple reason, is being elitist” RIGHT after my name…are you saying your entire argument was pointless? You addressed me by name, then you list off things that do not apply to me: Pointless.
And no, I’m not going to name any videos from MTV that display this kind of mosh pit “violence”. I don’t have to, to prove anything. It’s a bad video. They’re a bad band. This is my opinion — the same opinion you defend that allows you to post a My Chemical Romance video on a blog called “All Metal Resource” allows me to say it’s a waste of fucking time, more or less.
I didn’t say it “is” a poor translation of the song. I was careful to say I’m “pretty certain” but I also prefaced it with the facts that I don’t know much about the song, and am not a big enough fan to speak to it. It’s merely something to think about in relation to this video, which reeks of cheese (which is about as undeniable as the music’s punk ties). A short comment like “it’s like they looked up ‘mosh pit’ on wikipedia” doesn’t imply that it’s totally inaccurate. Just that it was executed poorly. I mean it’s My Chemical Romance on stage and they have cops in riot gear rushing into the venue. It’s ridiculous.
But the bottom line…?
All of this culminates into one BIG “why the hell are you addressing me in this argument when all I did was post an opinion about this stupid video?” I’ve backed up my original comment and then some. That is more than any of the Metallica fanboys can say. But I don’t have to argue with you about things you just decide to attach to my name.
Tonight at the Medley – Psycroptic, Blood Red Throne, My Chemical Romance
Cole – I never called My Chemical Romance metal, quit putting words in my mouth. Nor would I classify My Chemical Romance as “punk,” but this song is clearly punk. RX Bandits covered “Holy Wars”, does that make RX Bandits a metal band? No, but the cover is most definitely metal. I get that you don’t like the band, but to deny that this song sounds like Cocksparrer, The Clash, The Ramones, Bad Religion (whom are way more poppy and melodic than this cover, yet they are punk) and to a lesser degree Oi Polloi is preposterous. There are tons of melodic punk bands out there, just because its not hardcore or gritty as hell doesn’t mean it’s not punk.
Nate – You’re right, excuse me for not being spot on with my semantics, it was a broad statement that really wasn’t meant to single you out, why you decided to focus your entire argument on this one point is beyond me. As for your semantics, you are clearly stating that My Chemical Romance don’t know enough about moshing and you then referred me to MTV and Wikipedia as their primary influence for acquiring ideas for their moshpit video. This IS an elitist statement, so I guess I AM grouping you in with Cole and Chris now. I asked you to prove your point, which you seem to not be willing to do, which only reinforces my point that you simply don’t like this band and you’re willing to slag it as much as possible for no real reason whatsoever. And finally, how can you call this cheesy when there are thousands of metal vids out there that are far more cheesy and with horrible, horrible production values. They have riot police swarming a show, so what? You want it to be spot on accurate? It’s a friggin music video man, it’s supposed to be a bit over the top. Do you really think that metal bands just randomly play in warehouses and junkyards?
Cody, I think the thing you’re not getting is that this isn’t an argument for me. I do not like the band, or this cover, and I think the video is cheesy and stupid — I gave reasons for these opinions. I never referred you anywhere — I didn’t say “look up ‘mosh pit’ on wikipedia and notice all these similarities”. I never made an arguable claim, and that should have been clear because I was being upfront with my opinions and noting where I lacked experience to be any authority on such matters. It was you that addressed me in an argument and I responded accordingly. If you don’t understand that, I can explain it again.
Nothing I said was elitist. I don’t like the band. That is not elitist to imply, and I’m not comparing them to any other band that “does it better”. So what? Who cares? I never tried to argue against what you said, nor did I ask you to respond to my comment. You did all the work of addressing me in an argument that I never was a part of, and I think I was pretty clear in stating I don’t want to argue anything about this band or their cover of this song. Do you have this image in your head that Cole and Carter and I were teaming up against you? Because that isn’t the case, so you really need to stop grouping me in with them when arguing about this video.
The only points I’m trying to make are opinionated, and I never claimed them to be anything else. That is something I do not have to prove, and that is the reason I focused on the poor semantics. These comments were not aimed at you, just the video you posted. Also, if you read any further you’d have noticed I didn’t focus my entire post on your semantics. Please re-read my posts if you want to respond to this — otherwise don’t bother unless you’d like me to start ignoring your posts that start with “Nate…”. I’m not part of your argument with Cole and Carter.
Finally…
You said: “I asked you to prove your point, which you seem to not be willing to do, which only reinforces my point that you simply don’t like this band and you’re willing to slag it as much as possible for no real reason whatsoever.”
- You answered your own argument (luckily for me, because it’s getting tiring to have to explain over and over again that you’re wrong for arguing with me in the first place) when you said “you simply don’t like this band”. It’s not my fault that you didn’t read carefully or correctly, as I am allowed to have opinions like “this band sucks” and not have to prove why I don’t like their sound because it isn’t an argument for me. Nothing you can argue will make them sound any different, therefore this isn’t an argument and i still don’t like the band or this video.
You said: “And finally, how can you call this cheesy when there are thousands of metal vids out there that are far more cheesy and with horrible, horrible production values. They have riot police swarming a show, so what? You want it to be spot on accurate? It’s a friggin music video man, it’s supposed to be a bit over the top. Do you really think that metal bands just randomly play in warehouses and junkyards?”
- Again, I didn’t compare them to any other band. I’ve seen a lot of music videos that I’d say the same things about. So yes, you’re right, there are tons of worse videos out there — but you brought them up, not me. I don’t comment on a lot of other videos on this site because I don’t watch them. I understand you’re trying to drive readers in. You posted a “My Chemical Romance” video and I added my two cents. I was surprised to see “My Chemical Romance” on the front page of this site, so that is what made me check out the post. You got people to read this story…mission accomplished. But you got defensive about the video over an opinion. Don’t imply that we have to accept that “It’s a blog” and that we should “turn the elitism down a notch” and then exibit such poor ability to accept my opinion. I didn’t hold this video to any expectations, and it didn’t let me down. I just think it sucks.
The meaning of the term “elitist” encompasses this sort of thinking pretty wholly, that you can post a video and I can’t say it sucks without being dragged into a pointless argument because you think my opinion isn’t good enough. You said: “I guarantee you guys if I threw an AC/DC video up here you wouldn’t have made the same comments. Its not metal, so what? It’s a blog. Let’s turn the elitism down a notch gentlemen.” That’s just a IF, though I wouldn’t claim it to be inaccurate. Though I absolutely guarantee you did not respond to some of my other comments on my other recent posts which also included opinions.
Nate – This will be my last post, because its obviously getting kind of pointless at this point for all of us. My whole argument (and yes, I did start the argument) was based on the harsh, unfounded comments that both you and Cole issued. I don’t care that you guys don’t like the band, you could have said the video sucked and left it at that, but you guys threw out inflammatory comments while making your point. Cole’s comments probably provoked me the most, so I probably was a bit too defensive in response to yours. Can I caress your nipples now?
I guess I just realized how pointless it was to begin with, but I don’t think I made any comments out of line. It’s alright to dislike a band and say so without having to prove why you dislike the band beyond saying they sound shitty. I’m holding my ground on that, whether it really is your last post or not. Either way, no skin off my back it’s My Chemical Romance. It’s not as bad as trying to argue with Metallica fans though…ugh.
And my nipples are eyes-only…sorry.
ive touched them nate what do you mean eyes only? let the ole codeman get a piece
I think you guys should argue about who can write the longest argument rebuttal. war of the words
Cody – A study of state and local law enforcement training finds that 648 academies trained some 57,000 recruits in 2006 at a cost of $16,000 each. The study, by the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics, says that most are being trained for careers as local police officers. Others are training for jobs as sheriffs’ deputies, campus police, state police, constables, tribal police, natural resources officers, and transit police. Some 45 percent of the academies are operated by colleges and universities, and coursework covers such things as firearms, self-defense, health and fitness, investigations, criminal and constitutional law, first aid, and report writing. Training programs typically included more than 750 hours of class time, and a third of the academies required more than 450 hours of field training.
Nate- The government’s indictment alleges that W.R. Grace conspired to “knowingly release” the asbestos. It says the company tried to hide the dangers from employees and residents, leaving them “in imminent danger of death or serious bodily injury.”
“It was a purpose of the conspiracy to conceal and misrepresent the hazardous nature of the tremolite asbestos contaminated vermiculite, thereby enriching defendants and others,” the indictment reads.
And the indictment says W.R. Grace tried to “defraud the United States and others by impairing, impeding, and frustrating” the Environmental Protection Agency and other government agencies once they launched an investigation in 1999.
