Review: Seizure Crypt – Under the Gun (2008)
Hardcore…..hard…..core? Metal? Sort of. Emo? Fuck no. Breakdowns? Not really. Wow, hath my ears deceived me? Surprisingly, no. Hardcore does exist.
New York City’s Seizure Crypt brings to life a sound that is far from trendy, despite it belonging to a genre that is at the height of its popularity. Ironic right? There is nothing overly produced on Under the Gun, little in terms of technical merit, and the concept of “tightness” is pretty much non-existent; realistically, Seizure Crypt SHOULD be an awful band, but surprisingly, they are quite entertaining.
Combining thrash and grindcore elements, Under the Gun is not an album that was created to bring more fans to the band’s Myspace page. This is die hard hardcore for true hardcore fans. Song after song, the listener is treated to much of the same, which a very simplistic assault consisting of muddled, off tempo instrumentation and spastic yelling, but every song is also equally as fun and brief as the next one. In fact, the factors that would normally detract from most musical compositions actually benefits Seizure Crypt, because of the raw, upbeat feel of every song, combined with its short running time. Had Seizure Crypt decided to elongate the songs, or make more out of the writing than just brief moments of chaos, I am fairly certain this album would have sucked, but in its current form, Under the Gun is an entertaining blip of music that is probably best enjoyed live.
GOOD
