Review: Waking the Cadaver – Perverse Recollections of A Necromangler (2007)

5 April, 2009 (15:43) | Reviews, death metal, grindcore

First and foremost: What the fuck is this? Did someone hire Oinky the oinking pig oinking contest winner? Who decided that pig squeals for an entire album would be a cool thing to do? Experimentation is fine, but knowing when your experiments are epic failures is something I hope Waking the Cadaver realizes so they can rectify the problem on their next record. Is that an asshole thing to say? Yup. Was it warranted? Yup.

Perverse Recollections of A Necromangler takes what could have been a good grindcore album and absolutely neutered all hope of any positives for this record with HORRID vocals. I mean, this album is like “Freddy Got Fingered put into a blender and re-pressed as a grindcore CD” bad. Let me make it short and sweet for all the kids reading — pig squeals fucking suck! Its been proven that you can have a good grindcore record without completely dismantling any semblance of reasonable rhythm with the vocal delivery.

It’s undeniable that bands like Waking the Cadaver will find success, especially in this deathcore age we live in (Waking the Cadaver’s continuous use of breakdowns unfortunately places them in the same category despite having some nasty grindcore riffs) based on the band’s brutal delivery, and even the vocals. I can’t help but compare this band to Mortician in terms of vocals. Many, many metal fans despise Mortician because of their style, but the band have found a niche market and manage to stay in the game. I truly hope that Waking the Cadaver can clean up their vocals next time, because I want to enjoy this band. I don’t want them to convert to some mainstream sound or sacrifice what their aims are, but I am admittedly being selfish, and the band should clearly see things my way. :-)

One of the only bands that I think can get away with pig squeals would be Frightmare, and even then, they keep it to a tasteful level.

I don’t even know if the vocals in this album could be considered pig squeals. They obviously are, but they sound like shit. It sounds more like someone rubbing two ridged wood blocks together. Like a clicking noise.
