Review: We, The Undersigned – Bleed the Constants (2009)

We, the Undersigned, yet another band hailing from the greater North East of Canada ( in this case, New Brunswick), bring us their latest release, We the Constants, which brings to the table a lot of energy and quality musicianship, but as we have seen with past acts, combining good intentions with musicianship doesn’t always end with a positive result.
We, the Undersigned are essentially a less bombastic, and ultimately far less interesting version of Every Time I Die and Protest the Hero, both of which are bands that are terrible to mimic, because they do what they do FAR better than most everyone else. Bleed the Constants is all about bringing its listeners constant changes in riffs, grooves and melody, and anyone who is new to this style of music might actually find this to be a quality release. However, seasoned listeners of both the above referenced groups, will know that this is ultimately an inferior effort by a band with the talent to do so much more.
Bleed the Constants is an album that needs to breathe with originality, and it can’t because it succumbs to trying to be like everyone else. You can’t be a creative epicenter if the end result is a watered down version of something far superior. We, the Undersigned need to step back and re-orientate themselves because it’s entirely possible to play this style and “work,” but like many new bands trying to find their identity, sometimes it takes awhile to find what really works for both the band and the fans.
NOT BAD
