Review: Noctis Imperium – Imperium EP (2009)

Noctis Imperium
Noctis Imperium. An up and coming band from Venezuela that promises to “unleash it’s disease on humanity,” with their “anti-religious” lyrics and “shear brutality.” Same old song from a different bird some may say, as this band sticks to a very similar formula as most other black metal bands do. A distinct formula of interments (Commonly the guitar, bass and drums) being intensely strum or beaten , while a sweaty man will long hair, wearing all black with chains and leather boots is screaming lyrics that are very difficult to understand. A formula that has come to define almost all of metal. You may even say that this album follows this formula “religiously.” I must say that I was not very impressed.

Not to say I didn’t like it. They are definitely bards of anti-religion and the occult. Screaming passionately about their beliefs in not just English, but also in Spanish. Their rhythm is blunt and to the point; a wall of sound to the metal haters out there. However for the Metal heads this is the lullaby that rocks them to sleep, and the poetry that speaks to their hearts.

This album is what I like to call typical. Although very talented in the art of Black Metal, there is nothing that really distinguishes this album from others, other than their name and the fact their brutal lyrics are bilingual. They follow the formula so fiercely, there is no real way to tell who the hell they are unless you listen to them being announced, or if you read the cover to their case.

In short, Noctis Imperium is gifted with their chosen genre, my expectations for this album have been met. They have not exceeded them with their shocking lyrics and bold sound, but have managed to meet them by maintaining their gruff energy. I would suggest this album to any Metal head, but I would mention others first.
