Review: The Resurrection Sorrow – Hour of the Wolf (2009)

New York’s The Resurrection Sorrow’s claim to metal is of the stoner variety. And when I say stoner, I mean classic stoner metal. There is nothing “post metal” about the band’s debut effort, Hour of the Wolf, this is hard nosed muddy riff after muddy riff giving away a sound that can be likened to a heavier, darker version of latter day Corrosion of Conformity, and even some Kyuss/Unida, but not quite as upbeat or groovy. Another modern equivalent of The Resurrection Sorrow could be High on Fire or Birds of Prey, but unfortunately for the former, all comparisons are superior to Hour of the Wolf.

Now, to say that Hour of the Wolf is bad would be a bad determination on my part, because this album has every facet to be “good.” It has deep, dirty, heavy grooves as its personification, and a drummer who amplifies the severity of the riffs with a bleeding onslaught of heaviness. The downside of the band is their vocalist, Alex Dementia, who tries to sound way too much like Corrosion of Conformity’s Pepper Keenan, but ends up just sounding like a cheap clone instead of merely taking hints and inspiration from the COC legend. The riffs are killer on this album, but when Alex sings (which is the vast majority of the release), I find myself being dramatically turned off.

There’s no doubt that there could be a future for The Resurrection Sorrow, but until they work out their vocal dept, I won’t be subscribing anytime soon.

NOT BAD

Oh, you must have done because his name is underneath the review, but that doesn’t clear up who Ben Hogg is.

Guh…sorry Chris, thanks for the catch. I confused myself apparently. That’s what happens when you have way too many reference pages up during a review.
