Review: Uriah Heep - Wake the Sleeper (2008)

19 December, 2008 (23:17) | AOR, hard rock, traditional metal | 1 comment

Back in the 60’s and 70’s, rock music was presented with a new breed that pushed the envelope just a little bit further, with bands like Led Zeppelin, Blue Cheer, Deep Purple, RUSH and others forming a posse that would later be termed as proto-metal, meaning rock music that set the tone for what metal [...]

1. The Acacia Strain - Continent (2008)
You know how I spend a lot of time discussing my distaste for many a deathcore band? Well, consider this band one of those outlaws who contend for the title of most distasteful. Continent is full of uninspired, monotone growls on top of a bit more crunchy metalcore [...]

Review: Guns N’ Roses - Chinese Democracy (2008)

20 November, 2008 (22:22) | Reviews, hard rock | 3 comments

Well, for those who were wondering if Chinese Democracy, the sixth studio album from Guns N Roses, would ever be released in our lifetimes, the answer is yes after 10 years of waiting. Having not released original material since the early 90’s, not touring for nearly 7 years after that, and finally not containing any [...]

Underground Forgotten: Pride & Glory - Pride & Glory (1994)

17 November, 2008 (23:03) | Underground Forgotten, hard rock, stoner metal, traditional metal | No comments

Before becoming one of the greatest modern rock guitarists of our time, Zakk Wylde was involved in a little country and blues inspired metal outfit by the name of Pride & Glory. Combining traditional country rhythms with hard hitting riffs that would later show up in Wylde’s Black Label Society, PnG was truly a demonstration [...]

Review: Black Tide - Light From Above (2008)

27 March, 2008 (00:22) | AOR, Reviews, hard rock, thrash metal, traditional metal | No comments

To say that Black Tide are merely an immature band capitalizing on their age like so many underage artists do these days would be criminal. Combining traditional metal riffs and vocals, and Trivium level production values with crisp drums and solos, the only thing odd about Black Tide is the fact that they don’t play [...]

Review: Avantasia - The Scarecrow (2008)

7 March, 2008 (00:05) | AOR, Reviews, hard rock, heavy metal, power metal | No comments

If you are into power metal, the name Avantasia should immediately ring true. Hailed as one of the premiere metal side projects, Tobias Sammet’s (singer of Edguy) outlet for his works outside of Edguy have truly shown his ability to create music outside of his Edguy sphere. Putting together a slew of melodic vocalists to [...]

Review: Tiles - Fly Paper (2008)

4 March, 2008 (02:09) | Reviews, hard rock, progressive metal, progressive rock | 5 comments

Tiles, a Detroit based prog group, takes the route less traveled amongst American prog metal. It seems these days bands either attempt to take the route closer to the likes of power metal, or they go in a more assertive direction ala Between the Buried and Me. In fact, one could say that calling Tiles’ [...]
