Combining the likes of Opeth, Arcturus, Agalloch and Amorphis, Sweden’s In Mourning are a come out of nowhere success in the underground metal scene. Despite finding their roots as early as 2000, In Mourning have only released two albums since 2008. Monolith, the band’s latest album, is making waves as the next Swedish sensation with [...]

Greece’s Need have released their second full length, Siamese God, and it certainly shows promise. Containing a band full of members that clearly know what their doing, Need are looking to make a statement, however, is talent alone enough to make a statement true?
On one hand Need represents a fast paced, well orchestrated progressive metal [...]

Argentina’s Acid Rain has been an active prog outfit since 2002, but have only just begun releasing albums in the last couple of years beginning with 2008’s Infinity Beyond and last year’s The Descending Line which I recently had the opportunity to check out.
Acid Rain plays out just as they should, an independent level progressive [...]

Just listened to the new single “Deep Inside” by Terminal, and its pretty awesome! It’s not overtly aggressive, but certainly metal. If you want a REAL progressive metal sound with a mainstream melodic vibe, I’d highly suggest checking out Terminal and their new album Tree of Life.

Ahhh yes, the beginning of the 2010 season of metal, and oh what a year will it be! Let me start with the latest release from Ihsahn, the self titled project of Ihsahn (who is most famous for his participation with Emperor).
Having not listened to Ihsahn’s first couple of albums, I was interested to hear [...]

Alright, that’s kind of a cheap shot seeing as that I have listened to and reviewed many a quality self released album in 2009, but it seems like as of late many of the self released albums I have been getting haven’t fulfilled my expectations, to such an extent that I have been in a [...]

Prior to Chuck Schuldiner’s untimely passing, he was beginning to make new waves with his band, Control Denied, which is a U.S. Power Metal band with the same technical wrangling ever so present in latter Death albums (i.e. that trademarked Death guitar and bass tone). Chuck shows with Control Denied that his vision of metal [...]

Walken, a Bay Area progressive thrash band has released their second full length, self released album of their own namesake. This is definitely an interesting album which brings aspects of traditional progressive metal, crossover thrash and post metal/sludge rumblings, which is quite different than the likes of other progressive thrash pedigrees such as Watchtower, who [...]

Wizardry. When I had heard of this band, I assumed that this was just another “garage band.” A band that had thrown together a bunch of sounds that sounded kind of good when they had tried them all separately. Then recorded it on their crappy equipment, and have delusions of their band some day “making [...]

I was looking forward to this album for sometime from Portuguese prog metallers Factory of Dreams after listening to one song which I thought held a lot of potential. After waiting for several weeks, I finally received the full length A Strange Utopia, upon listening to it in its entirety a few times, I can [...]
