2010′S RUNNING BEST/WORST

Here are AMR’s choices for best and worst of 2010…so far. There are no number limits to either list and they’re not in any particular order, its just a tally of great albums and tragic albums we come across during the year highlighted in one, convenient location. At the end of the year when we come up with our top 10 lists, it’s a good guess we will be working from this bad boy. And as a specification, this list may technically include releases from the previous year as we will judge release dates based on an album’s U.S. date which are often in the new year depending on a band’s country of origin and label.

BEST

  1. Ihsahn – After
  2. Brainstorm – Memorial Roots
  3. Heathen – The Evolution of Chaos
  4. In Mourning – Monolith
  5. Overkill – Ironbound
  6. Arsis – Starve For the Devil
  7. Lair of the Minotaur – Evil Power
  8. White Wizzard – Over the Top
  9. Sectioned – Purulent Reality

WORST

  1. We Are the Ocean – Cutting Our Teeth

Where’s Gojira-The Wall of All Flesh under the Best of 2008? Really guys? Leaving that album out is like…a crime against metal.

I actually simply forgot to add it to this list Tim, but you are right, that is a great album. If you check out the main page, however, I believe Cole or Nate did include it in their best of lists for the year.

I wonder what the Death Magnetic of 09 will be. My guess? Death Magnetic. We’re due for another one of their dismal songs to hit the radio soon and uneducated “metal heads” to start blathering about how “they’re back.” I think that as of right now, AMR should truly coin the genre tag of Trash Metal. The term will be used for old bands that try to rehash their old sound but for the life of them can not do it. You could put 2 Megadeth albums in there (Risk and The World Needs A Hero) and 2 Metallica albums (I need not go into detail as to which ‘Tallica albums belong).

I’m still not over how rediculously good Napalm Death’s new album is.

And haha I miss-titled Gojira’s album. The Way of All Flesh…my bad.

I think this the best thing of 2009 so far:

But then again I’m musically stuck in the 90s!

[...] New Life Behind Closed Eyes just doesn’t do enough to maintain my interest. The watered down riffs that we have been hearing from a multitude of metalcore bands, and the paint by numbers scheme that Pantera instituted years ago, is not something that is really worth more time than the listens it takes me to review this. Take your hard earned money elsewhere and pick up one of the many releases this year that I and others on this site have given glowing reviews for which can be accessed here. [...]

I just removed this website from my bookmarks…. Crack the Skye #8??? Its possibly the best album in all of music thus far in 09 though more experimental than Metal. And dubbing Wrath as one of the worst albums is just amazing to me. You people do this for a living. The Grave Digger album is average AT BEST. I know everyone has their own preferences, but yours are obviously puerile.

I don’t agree with this list either but I think I’m correct when I say that Cody hasn’t put these in any kind of order. Wait til the end of the year for the ordered list.

Seriously MetalMeatHammer, before you take us off your bookmarks, read the damn intro. This is an ongoing list of noteworthy releases for the year in no particular, both good and bad. Chillax brother!

No. It shouldn’t. That said, Wrath really isn’t THAT bad. Contractor and Set To Fail are both cool songs. The rest is kinda forgettable.

Anaal Nathrakh’s new album is fantastic and so isn’t Kalisia’s (spelling?) new album.

Giant Squid, and maudlin of the Well should be added as well.

Its good to see another Maine metal head who actually listens to some good stuff. You should also make an entry in your blog for local Maine metal bands, only Dead Season and Tomorrows Tragedy come to mind.

DethDonald – Thanks for the comment! And the reason why I don’t feature many Maine bands, is because most of them suck. Dead Season is probably the most famous, but I really can’t stand them. I have featured a review of a great punk band by the name of Jodi Explodi who play Portland often.

Dood that Giant Squid album is DIRTY! Thats some of the craziest weird metal I’ve heard in a while. It’s freaking awesome.

If you want some old school Death metal with a cool classical(?) influence, go for Fleshgod Apocalypse’s album Oracles. Its like…Immolation style death metal but some of the song have like…harp intros or a gregorian chant outro. It’s in my running for album of the year again Napalm Death’s new stuff.

2 things!: First, the new scar symmetry leaked on youtube sounds really really really good. The dual singers work out extremely well; video found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqsOelqaqzE
Second, the 3 new songs on Winds of Plague’s new album on their myspace have definently embraced the melodic side of what they started and sound a lot more….death metally than deathcorey. I’m thoroughly happy they didn’t screw that up.

You have to review Thy Catafalque’s Róka Hasa Rádió. One of the most interesting albums Ive heard this year.

Magnum Carnage on the worst of 2009 list? Really? Next time, I think I’ll just capture my irritable bowel syndrome blasts (6-10 daily) directly to Pro-Tools.
